Our Stories

Two families. One farm. One cause.

For the past two years, Ben and Jessica Green have turned Green Fam Farm into a fundraiser for the IWK. This year, Canon’s House of Doom moves onto the farm, bringing together two families who owe so much to the IWK, and one very scary good time.

The House of Doom Canon’s Story A warrior for the IWK, and the reason the House of Doom began in 2021. Green Fam Farm Elliott’s Story A NICU start, a lifelong bond with the IWK, and why the Greens give back.
Canon’s Story

A Warrior for the IWK

In March 2021, a mass was found on Canon’s kidney during a routine check for abdominal pain. At first, it seemed like a playground football injury, but follow-ups revealed it was a Stage 1 Wilms’ Tumour. Canon underwent a nephrectomy and several surgeries, followed by 24 weeks of chemotherapy.

In November 2021, Canon rang the bell after his final treatment, marking the end of his cancer journey. However, the impact of childhood cancer extended beyond physical recovery. A year later, Canon developed PTSD, requiring support from IWK’s oncology and mental health teams. Thanks to their care, Canon found his way back to joy, especially his love for Halloween.

In July 2022, Canon had another health scare that led to an appendectomy. However, nothing could stop him from enjoying a fun-filled summer of paddling, cottaging, and preparing for Halloween, his favourite time of the year.

The House of Doom event began in 2021 to combine Canon’s love for Halloween with gratitude for IWK Health. Now, Canon is not only a warrior for himself but a proud supporter of the IWK Foundation.

The Green Family’s Story

Everyone Here Knows Elliott

Both of our sons were born prematurely and spent time in the NICU at the IWK. Our youngest son, Elliott, faced an even more difficult start. He was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a serious condition that can affect the lungs and other organs and requires extensive specialized medical care.

At just two days old, Elliott underwent life-saving surgery, followed by weeks of recovery in the NICU. During that time, he was cared for by an incredible team of doctors, nurses, specialists and other health-care professionals who supported not only Elliott, but our entire family.

Elliott continues to require extensive follow-up through the IWK, and because of his diagnosis, his relationship with many of these specialists may continue throughout his life.

Our family will always have a very strong connection to the IWK. Shortly after Elliott’s diagnosis, one of his doctors said something to us that we have never forgotten:

Everyone here knows who Elliott is. If you didn’t feel like family before, you certainly will now.
One of Elliott’s doctors at the IWK

Those words have stayed with us. Over the years, we have built relationships with so many of the incredible people and programs at the IWK, and we have experienced firsthand the care, compassion and support they provide to families during some of their most difficult moments.

We will always be incredibly grateful for everything the IWK has done and continues to do for Elliott and our family.

Frequently Asked Questions

How scary is it?

We think it’s pretty scary.

Green Fam Farm is designed to be a full haunt experience, with creepy environments, jump scares, actors, animatronics, and plenty of surprises along the way.

Is it too scary for my child?

It really depends on the child! We’ve had some kids absolutely love going through, while some adults have found it too scary.

You know your child best. If you’re not sure, join us on Sunday, October 25 from 2–4 PM for our No-Scare Walk-Through.

There will be no actors and no automatic animatronics, so you can explore the haunt, see what it’s all about, and experience Green Fam Farm without the screams.

Are there live actors?

Yes! During our regular haunt nights, expect live actors as part of the experience, along with animatronics, sound effects, dark spaces, and plenty of surprises.

Are there flashing lights, loud noises, or jump scares?

Yes. Green Fam Farm includes dark lighting, loud and sudden noises, jump scares, animatronics, and other sensory effects throughout the experience.

Is Green Fam Farm accessible?

Not really. The haunt takes place on an outdoor property with uneven terrain and changes in level, and the experience is intentionally quite dark. The indoor portion also includes some narrow spaces.

That said, please contact us if you have accessibility concerns. We’re happy to talk through the setup with you and help you decide whether a visit will work for you.

Can I leave if it gets too scary?

Of course. If at any point you need to leave the haunt, let one of our volunteers or actors know and we’ll help you get out safely.

How long does it take to go through?

Most groups take about 7 to 12 minutes, but your exact time will vary depending on how quickly your group moves, and how often we make you stop in your tracks.

Can I go through more than once?

Yes! But to be fair to everyone, you’ll need to head back to the end of the line and make another donation before going through again.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

No tickets are sold or needed in advance. The one exception is Scream With Your Team night, which is booked and paid for ahead of time.

For all other times, join the line, and our awesome volunteers will collect your donation before you enter the haunt.

Can I host a birthday party at Green Fam Farm?

We aren’t able to host traditional birthday parties at Green Fam Farm, but you can book your party for one of our Scream With Your Team nights!

Birthday groups have done this in the past and it has been incredibly popular. It’s a pretty unforgettable way to celebrate with a group of friends.

Can I bring a group or team?

Absolutely. Our Scream With Your Team nights are designed for groups, teams, birthday celebrations, and anyone looking for a memorable night out together.

Can I volunteer with Green Fam Farm?

Yes, we would love to have you!

Green Fam Farm takes a huge crew to bring to life, from actors and scare crew to crowd control, donation collection, outdoor activities, and behind-the-scenes help.

Can I bring my dog?

Unfortunately, no. We ask that you leave your pets at home. It’s too scary for doggies anyway!

Can I take photos or videos?

Absolutely! We welcome photos and videos, and we’ll also have some fun photo opportunities set up during your visit.

Please share your photos and videos and tag us so we can see them: @greenfamfarm and @houseofdoomhaunts

Where does the money go?

Green Fam Farm is about much more than scares. The event supports the IWK Foundation, helping support world-class care for Maritime children and women.

Giving back to the IWK remains at the heart of the event.

What should I wear?

Dress for the weather and wear footwear you’re comfortable walking in. Much of the experience is outdoors and the terrain can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is a very good idea.

What happens if it rains?

Because part of the experience is outdoors, weather may affect operations. Check our website and social media before heading out if the forecast is questionable.
