Our Stories

Two families. One farm. One cause.

For the past two years, Ben and Jessica Green have turned Green Fam Farm into a fundraiser for the IWK. This year, Canon’s House of Doom moves onto the farm, bringing together two families who owe so much to the IWK, and one very scary good time.

The House of Doom Canon’s Story A warrior for the IWK, and the reason the House of Doom began in 2021. Green Fam Farm Elliott’s Story A NICU start, a lifelong bond with the IWK, and why the Greens give back.
Canon’s Story

A Warrior for the IWK

In March 2021, a mass was found on Canon’s kidney during a routine check for abdominal pain. At first, it seemed like a playground football injury, but follow-ups revealed it was a Stage 1 Wilms’ Tumour. Canon underwent a nephrectomy and several surgeries, followed by 24 weeks of chemotherapy.

In November 2021, Canon rang the bell after his final treatment, marking the end of his cancer journey. However, the impact of childhood cancer extended beyond physical recovery. A year later, Canon developed PTSD, requiring support from IWK’s oncology and mental health teams. Thanks to their care, Canon found his way back to joy, especially his love for Halloween.

In July 2022, Canon had another health scare that led to an appendectomy. However, nothing could stop him from enjoying a fun-filled summer of paddling, cottaging, and preparing for Halloween, his favourite time of the year.

The House of Doom event began in 2021 to combine Canon’s love for Halloween with gratitude for IWK Health. Now, Canon is not only a warrior for himself but a proud supporter of the IWK Foundation.

The Green Family’s Story

Everyone Here Knows Elliott

Both of our sons were born prematurely and spent time in the NICU at the IWK. Our youngest son, Elliott, faced an even more difficult start. He was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a serious condition that can affect the lungs and other organs and requires extensive specialized medical care.

At just two days old, Elliott underwent life-saving surgery, followed by weeks of recovery in the NICU. During that time, he was cared for by an incredible team of doctors, nurses, specialists and other health-care professionals who supported not only Elliott, but our entire family.

Elliott continues to require extensive follow-up through the IWK, and because of his diagnosis, his relationship with many of these specialists may continue throughout his life.

Our family will always have a very strong connection to the IWK. Shortly after Elliott’s diagnosis, one of his doctors said something to us that we have never forgotten:

Everyone here knows who Elliott is. If you didn’t feel like family before, you certainly will now.
One of Elliott’s doctors at the IWK

Those words have stayed with us. Over the years, we have built relationships with so many of the incredible people and programs at the IWK, and we have experienced firsthand the care, compassion and support they provide to families during some of their most difficult moments.

We will always be incredibly grateful for everything the IWK has done and continues to do for Elliott and our family.
